What you need

• An iPhone running iOS 17 or later.
• No permissions. Location, notifications and alarms are optional, and the app asks only when you turn the feature on.
• An internet connection the first time you play a reciter. After that the audio is cached and works offline.
• Space. The app is large, over 300 MB once installed, so install it over Wi-Fi.

Common questions

Is there an Android version?

Not on the Play Store yet. The Android version is being tested right now, and it is the same app: the same mushaf, the same repeat, the same prayer times. To try it:

1. Email contact@farhanhossain.com with the subject Android beta. Send it from the Google account you use on your Android phone, or write that address in the email.
2. We add you to the testers list by hand and reply with the install link.
3. Open the link on your phone, tap Become a tester, then install the app from the Play Store. Stay signed in to that same Google account.

It is free, like the iPhone app, and you can stop testing at any time.

How do I repeat an ayah?

Open a surah and tap an ayah on the page. Tap a second ayah if you want a range. The bar at the bottom then says what you have chosen: tap Repeat and it starts playing. The sliders button beside it is where you change how many times each ayah plays, how long a gap to leave for reciting along, and which reciter. With nothing chosen, the same bar offers the whole surah.

How do I get prayer times for my city?

The Salah tab asks where you are praying. Choose a city by name from the built-in list, which needs no permission, or tap Use my location and allow location once. The times, the Hijri date and the qibla direction are then worked out on your phone.

The widget says to choose a city

The widgets read the city from the app. Open Hifz Quran, go to the Salah tab and choose a city. The widgets fill in after that.

The adhan or the alert did not sound

Each prayer has its own switch for an alert or an adhan in the app. Turn it on, and allow notifications when asked. If your phone is on silent or in a Focus, a normal notification stays quiet; for a prayer that must wake you, turn on its alarm instead, which asks for its own permission and sounds through the silent switch.

Do I need the internet?

Only for recitation audio. The mushaf, the Quran text, the translations, the word meanings and the duas are inside the app and work offline from the start. The internet is used to fetch a reciter's audio the first time you play it; after that it is cached on your iPhone. You can also download a surah ahead of time from the repeat settings.

What does it cost?

Hifz Quran is free, with no subscription, no in-app purchases, and no account to make.

Which reciters are included?

Thirty-one, every one of them recorded ayah by ayah, so a repeat always starts and stops on the ayah. Among them: Mishary Alafasy, Mahmoud Al-Husary, Mohamed El-Minshawi, Abdul Basit, Abdul Rahman As-Sudais, Saud Ash-Shuraim, Saad Al-Ghamdi, Maher Al-Muaiqly and Yasser Ad-Dosari. Where do I find the tafsir?

Tap Tafsir under an ayah in the ayah view, or tap the ayah on the mushaf page and use the same button there. It is a short explanation of what the ayah means, in nine languages: Arabic, English, Bengali, Urdu, French, Spanish, Indonesian, Turkish and Russian. It is inside the app, so it works with no internet. Pick which one you read under View.

Which translations are there?

Nineteen, in seventeen languages: English (three of them), Bengali, Urdu, French, Spanish, Indonesian, Turkish, Russian, Persian, Hindi, Tamil, Malay, German, Italian, Portuguese, Chinese and Swahili. Hold any word in the ayah view for its own meaning, which is available in nine of those languages. Choose the translation and turn word meanings on under View.

The screen turned off while I was reading

It should not. While a mushaf page is open, the app keeps the screen awake so you can read to the end of the page without touching it. It goes back to your usual Auto-Lock as soon as you leave the page. If your phone is in Low Power Mode, iOS can still dim the screen.

Where is my progress kept?

On your iPhone, in the app's own storage. It is not sent anywhere and there is no account attached to it. Deleting the app deletes it, so if you are moving to a new phone, use an iPhone or iCloud device backup to carry the app and its data across.

The app is large

It is over 300 MB, because the mushaf is built from more than a thousand page fonts rather than pictures of pages, and three prints are included. That is what lets a page stay sharp at any size and match the print line for line. Install over Wi-Fi. Recitation audio is downloaded separately as you play it, and you can clear it any time from Settings → Audio → Downloaded recitations → Clear.

Is this a replacement for a teacher?

No. Hifz Quran is a companion for your daily practice, a patient way to drill and review between lessons. Your memorization and your tajwīd are best checked with a knowledgeable teacher.
