What you need

Common questions

How does the listening work?

You choose a passage and recite it from memory. The app follows your voice and reveals each word on the page as you say it. If you skip a word or say the wrong one, it marks that spot softly in crimson so you know where to look. All of this happens on your iPhone.

Is my recitation really private?

Yes. By default, recognition runs on your iPhone with a built-in model, and your voice is not recorded, saved, or sent to us. If you switch to Apple's recognizer in Settings, or your device has no on-device Arabic, Apple may transcribe your recitation to follow along, as the privacy policy explains. Either way there are no accounts, and we never hear or see anything. See the privacy policy for the full picture.

Do I need the internet?

Reading the mushaf and reciting with the built-in model work offline. The internet is used to fetch a reciter’s audio the first time you play it (after that it is cached), and, if you use Apple's recognizer on a device without on-device Arabic, to transcribe your recitation through Apple.

What does it cost?

Hifz Quran is free, with no subscription, no in-app purchases, and no account to make.

Which reciters are included?

Ten: Alafasy, Al-Husary, Al-Minshawi, Abdul Basit, As-Sudais, Ash-Shuraim, Al-Ghamdi, Al-Muaiqly, Ad-Dosari, and Badr al-Turki. You can set per-āyah and whole-group repeat counts, recite-along pauses, and playback speed.

Will my progress move to a new phone?

If you are signed in to iCloud, your progress backs up to your own private iCloud and comes with you when you set up a new iPhone. If you are not signed in to iCloud, it stays on the device.

It flagged a word I recited correctly

On-device recognition is a helpful aid, not a judge, and it can occasionally mishear, especially in a noisy room or when reciting very quickly. Reciting in a quiet space, at a steady pace, helps a lot. When it does slip, you can carry on; nothing is graded against you unfairly. For anything important, verify your hifz with a qualified teacher.

The microphone will not work

Open Settings → Hifz Quran on your iPhone and make sure Microphone and Speech Recognition are turned on. If you tapped “Don’t Allow” earlier, this is where you switch it back.

Is this a replacement for a teacher?

No. Hifz Quran is a companion for your daily practice, a patient way to drill and review between lessons. The memorization of the Quran and the correctness of your tajwīd are best confirmed with a knowledgeable teacher.
